RTX 3090's 8-Pin Connectors Melted at Just 65°C — It's Not Only a 12VHPWR Problem
Melted power connectors aren't exclusive to the 12VHPWR era. A recent case shows the trusty old 8-pin PCIe connector can fail just as dramatically — even when the GPU itself is running cool.
What Happened
On October 3, 2026, gamegpu reported an ASUS TUF RTX 3090 owner running an FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1200W PSU with a 375W power limit. His GPU die sat at a comfortable 65°C — yet the card's 8-pin power connectors melted. Swapping in a brand-new cable didn't help: the PC still shut down under 3D load, because the damage was on the PCB side — the board's own connector contacts were ruined. His temporary workaround? Two case fans zip-tied over the connector area to keep it alive.
The Technical Breakdown
An 8-pin PCIe connector is rated for 150W; a 3090 at 375W draws roughly 125W per connector plus 75W from the PCIe slot — within spec on paper. But years of thermal cycling gradually loosen pin tension, contact resistance creeps upward, and resistive heating (which scales with the square of current) melts housings even at "safe" GPU temperatures. Here's the key insight: the GPU die temperature is irrelevant to this failure. The meltdown happens at the connector interface, inches away from the cool die. And once the PCB-side contacts are damaged, no new cable on earth will fix it — the failure is soldered to the board.
Advice for Hong Kong Readers
Hong Kong's humidity and dust accelerate contact oxidation, and many 3090s in the city lived through the mining era running at full tilt for years. If your card is three or more years old and regularly sees sustained high loads, pull the power cables and look for any yellowing or deformation on the housings. Keep solid airflow over the connector zone — it genuinely helps — but treat it as prevention, not a cure.
When to Seek Professional Repair
Shutdowns under load that persist after trying a new cable point squarely at PCB-side connector damage. Case fans are a band-aid; the real fix is desoldering the damaged connector and fitting a new one — precise rework, but very doable. Catch it early and it's a modest repair. Keep running it melted and you risk taking the power stages with it.
